Local governments will evaluate new authorities related to Summit County's minimum wage

Contact: Scott Vargo, County Manager, 970-453-3404

SUMMIT COUNTY – Summit County government announced that it will convene and facilitate a Summit County Minimum Wage Work Group. Participants will include the County and the towns of Blue River, Breckenridge, Dillon, Frisco and Silverthorne. Representatives of the business community and other community members will also be invited to participate, with meetings expected to begin this month.

The work group will examine and evaluate new authorities granted to counties and municipalities under Colorado House Bill 2019-1210 to set a local minimum wage higher than the state's minimum wage. The new work group aims to study and determine if a consensus may be reached on a minimum wage that would benefit the local community.

"We know that the cost of living is something that many workers struggle with here in Summit County, and our average wages are lower than the state average," County Commissioner Thomas Davidson said. "The state minimum wage may not be adequate for our local economic environment, so now that we have this new authority, we need to explore our community's views on the topic and determine the course of action that's best for our workers, our local economy, our businesses and our social safety nets."

Individuals and organizations interested in participating in discussions about the local minimum wage can contact Summit County Manager Scott Vargo at scott.vargo@summitcountyco.gov.
