SUMMIT COUNTY – Summit County, in partnership with the Physical Activity and Nutrition Team of the Summit (PANTS), is promoting healthy cooking and eating on National Food Day, Oct. 24, with hands-on educational events throughout the community.

“We’re celebrating real food and good nutrition by sharing easy, practical ways that local families can prepare meals that are healthy, affordable and delicious,” said Whitney Horner, director of the Summit County Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

Since 2014, thousands of Summit County residents have participated in Food Day activities across the community, including at local schools and grocery stores. Each year, PANTS celebrates National Food Day by shining the spotlight on a different vegetable and sharing ways to incorporate it into everyday meal preparation. This year the focus will be kale.

PANTS representatives will have booths set up at local grocery stores from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24. They’ll conduct live, bilingual demonstrations of kale recipes and provide free samples, along with recipe cards and nutrition education. The booths will be located at City Market in Dillon, Natural Grocers in Frisco, Safeway in Frisco and City Market in Breckenridge.

National Food Day lunch celebrations will take place at all Summit School District elementary schools, where students will receive kale chip samples, recipe cards and produce pencils.

PANTS is a diverse coalition of organizations and individuals in Summit County that works to promote healthy eating and active lifestyles. Coalition members include local government agencies, health care providers, nonprofits and local businesses.
